An investigation into failure analysis of interfering part of a steam turbine journal bearing

Failure analysis investigations were carried out on a failed interfering part of journal bearing related to turbine of a steam power plant. In order to indicating the failure mechanism, visual and experimental investigations were performed. Vickers hardness of cold worked surface was increased about three times with respectto initial base steel. Chemical composition and microstructure of the failed zone were so closed to initial base metal. Moreover, large amounts of cracks and localized upsdowns deformation paths on the surfaces were observed.
